How Does Iris Photography Actually Work?

You’ve probably seen iris photography on our site or elsewhere online and wondered: how do they actually photograph your iris?

The process is surprisingly simple for the person being photographed. The work behind the finished image is where things get interesting.

At Irisium Iris Photography in Sherwood Park, we use a specialized macro photography systems designed to capture the incredible detail inside your iris.

During your session, you are carefully positioned in front of the camera and asked to look toward a specific point. We then photograph the iris using controlled lighting that allows the camera to capture details that are extremely difficult to see just by looking in a mirror.

The actual photography only takes a few moments.

What Happens After Your Iris Is Photographed?

Capturing the iris is only the beginning.

Your photograph is then professionally edited by hand. We work with the detail, colour and texture that were captured in your actual iris to create the finished image.

We aren't generating a new eye with AI or applying a one-click filter. The patterns, lines, colours and structures you see come from your iris.

That's part of what makes iris photography so fascinating. Two people can have the same general eye colour and have completely different-looking irises when photographed up close.

What Do You Receive?

Once your iris has been professionally edited, you receive a printable digital image of your finished iris.

You can enjoy it exactly as it is or use it to create custom iris artwork. Couples, families and friends can also combine multiple irises into one finished art piece.

The entire process turns something you use every day, but have probably never really seen, into a photograph completely unique to you.

That’s iris photography.

And the best part might be seeing your own eye for the first time.
